The gable wall of the Van Wert building in 2021, one range of tan and brown brick running from the new covered entrance past two arched windows

Staining a Gable Peak Into Range on a Van Wert Office

The gable end of this building went up in two runs of brick, and the peak did not match the wall under it. The brick manufacturer paid to have the peak stained into range in 2004. Photographed again seventeen years later and certified then.

Case No. 402
Structure Single-story office building
Location Van Wert, Ohio
Stained 2004
Re-photographed 2021
Elapsed 17 years, Gold level

2004

  1. The gable end of the single-story building in 2004, the peak above the arched windows and entrance doors laid in a lighter run of brick than the wall below it, with three workers carrying an extension ladder across the drive Before, 2004 View this photo larger
  2. The same gable in 2004 with the peak brought darker to sit with the wall below, two strips of red tape marking courses high on the wall and a man on a bench by the entrance During, 2004 View this photo larger

What was wrong

Two different runs of brick on the building, in the file's words. The first frame shows it: the peak of the gable reads lighter than the wall it sits on. The brick manufacturer hired the correction, not the owner.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed on by hand, on the peak only. The file records it as staining the peak of the entrance to closely match the rest of the brick on the building.

2021, seventeen years on

  1. The building in 2021 with snow on the ground, a new covered entrance built across the gable wall beside two arched windows, with the certification stamp in the corner After, 2021 View this photo larger

What seventeen years prove

The file is plain about one complication: a new covered entrance had been built across the wall by 2021, so part of the stained peak now sits behind it. What is still in view holds one range with the brick around it, and the file's verdict is "still looks great". On the certification scale that is Gold, fifteen years and over. As of 2026 the work is twenty-two years old, and the 2021 certification is the most recent record on it.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 402, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
