Craftsmen First, Company Second

Bramwell-McKay is a team of master masons, restoration experts, and material consultants.

What we stand for

Great buildings start with great people. The staining is the craft. The mission is bigger: the company is just a vehicle by which we build amazing people. We bring young people into the trades, including high schoolers in the summer, and surround them with mentors who push them in their skills, their work, and their lives. Every wall we stain is a byproduct of that.

Bettering People, Bettering the Built Environment.

The partnership behind the product

We work in partnership with Masonry Cosmetics, whose founders came out of the brick manufacturing industry and whose mineral stain systems have been proving themselves on brick since 1988, with documented, revisited, re-photographed results.

The standard we hold

We do what is in the best interest of the project, our client, and our people. That includes telling you no: if you ask us to paint your brick, we will decline, explain why, and show you the better way.

  • Authority. This is the only thing our staining crews do, with the most proven system in the industry.
  • Integrity. Real photos, real numbers, real reviews.
  • Longevity. We sell work that outlives us, and we warranty it for life.
  • Service. Our crews carry groceries, take pictures with your dog, and stay until it is right.

Don Foster

Co-Owner

Don took a summer job at the Hanley Brick Plant in Summerville, Pennsylvania, and stayed, working as shapes maker, brick setter, packer, and glaze sprayman before he was made glaze foreman.

With Glen-Gery he moved through distribution and architectural sales, and from 1994 ran the Ohio region, where the Iberia plant went from heavy losses to a profit of over $2 million by 2000. He then became co-owner of Masonry Cosmetics with Rick. Don presents the AIA/CES registered course “The Creativity of Brick Matching,” and in 2022 the Mason Contractors Association of America gave him its C. DeWitt Brown Leadman Award.

Rick grew up in southeastern Ohio, in a house that overlooked the brick plant where his father and uncles worked. He studied ceramic and heat processing engineering at Hocking College, then started up industrial kilns across North America for Bickley Furnaces.

In 1983 he joined Glen-Gery's plant in Caledonia, Ohio, as a quality control engineer and later its kiln engineer. By 27 he was working on brick color correction, and Glen-Gery sent him to solve color problems at any of its 17 plants. He started his own staining company in the early 1990s, and the process he developed is the one we apply.

Things homeowners actually ask

No. Paint sits on top of brick like a film, traps moisture, and peels. Mineral stain soaks into the brick and becomes part of it. The brick keeps breathing and the color never peels off.
For the life of the brick. Mineral stain will not fade, chip, or peel, and it never needs to be redone. That is why it comes with a lifetime warranty.
Yes. Stained brick can be stained again, usually to a darker or richer color, without hurting the brick at all.
A full home color change usually runs $15,000 to $25,000 or more. Small fixes and color matches can be a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. It costs more than paint up front and far less over a lifetime, because it is done once.
No. Mineral stain uses the same mineral pigments used to color brick when it is made. It soaks in, lets the brick breathe, and protects the look of the masonry instead of sealing it under a film.
Before the full job, we stain a sample area on your actual wall and adjust it until it is exactly right. The cost of the sample is credited toward your project.
