The house from the driveway in 2019, its pale grey brick running unbroken across the main gable, the garage wing and the covered entry

Staining Most of a Pennsylvania House Instead of Replacing It

The brick on this house went up with color problems, and the plan on the table was to tear all of it off. The company that made the brick paid to have it stained instead. It was photographed again eleven years later and certified then.

Case No. 162
Structure Two-story home, three-car garage
Location Pennsylvania
Stained July 2008
Re-photographed 2019
Elapsed 11 years, Silver level

2008

  1. A side wall of the house in 2008, the light brick uneven with grey and tan units breaking up the courses around a single window Before, 2008 View this photo larger
  2. The upper gable end in 2008 under a white soffit, the pale brick blotched with darker grey and rust coloured units Before, 2008 View this photo larger

What was wrong

The file records it in one line: "This house had a lot of color issues." The brick had gone up in shades that did not agree with each other, and the answer on the table was to rip all the brick down and replace the brick.

It was hired by the brick manufacturer, not the homeowner and not the builder. The company that made the brick paid for staining over tear-out, in the words of the file, to save everyone time, stress, and money.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed into the brick by hand. Not a patch in one corner either: the file says the majority of the brick on this home was stained, which is why the walls read as one range today rather than as a repair.

What eleven years prove

Same house, same brick, photographed again in 2019 with the color still holding. On the certification scale that is Silver, which covers ten years and over. As of 2026 the work is eighteen years old, and the 2019 certification is the most recent record on it.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 162, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
