The brick of the Ohio building in 2019, one red brown range running below a wall of dark glazing

Staining Rejected Light Brick Into Range on an Ohio Building

Light colored brick went up all over this building and did not match the rest of the wall. The owners rejected it. The brick manufacturer paid for the light brick to be stained into range in 2002 rather than see the wall torn down. It was photographed again seventeen years later and certified at Platinum.

Case No. 282
Structure Commercial building
Location Ohio
Stained 2002
Re-photographed 2019
Elapsed 17 years, Platinum level

2002

  1. The gable end in 2002, pale buff brick under a sloping wall of dark glazing, with bare graded dirt and a steel drum in front of it Before, 2002 View this photo larger
  2. The same wall in 2002 from closer in, the buff brick running the full width below the glazing, a young tree staked in raw ground at the left During, 2002 View this photo larger

What was wrong

Light colored brick had been laid all over the building and it did not match. Nothing had failed. The owners rejected the brick, and the file is plain about the alternative on the table: tearing it down. The brick manufacturer hired the correction.

What was done

All of the light brick was stained, worked unit by unit, so the wall carries one range instead of two. The 2002 frames are from before any of it went on, with the site still under construction.

2019, seventeen years on

  1. The gable end in 2019, the brick reading as one red brown range from the paving to the glazing, with benches against the wall and mature trees beyond 2019 View this photo larger
  2. The wall in 2019 square on, every course holding the same red brown range across the full width, a bench standing against the foot of it After, 2019 View this photo larger
  3. The same wall in 2019 from further back, running from a bench and a timber bin past a dome camera to the window band above 2019 View this photo larger
  4. A close view of the brick in 2019, individual units varying within one red brown range across the courses and the mortar joints reading grey between them 2019 View this photo larger
  5. A curved two-storey wing of the same building in 2019, its brick carrying the same range around the bend past two window groups to a service recess 17 Years After View this photo larger

What seventeen years prove

Same gable, same wall, one range from the paving to the glazing, and that range carried round the curved wing. On the certification scale that is Platinum. As of 2026 the work is twenty four years old.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 282, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
