Staining New Brick to the Old on a Michigan Shopping Plaza

New brick went up on this plaza in a color that did not agree with the brick already there. A business paid to have every new unit stained to the old brick rather than pulled off. It was photographed again twenty-one years later and certified then.

What was wrong

The file puts the issue in seven words: the new brick did not match the old brick. Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty. New work went up beside existing walls in brick that read as a different color.

A business paid for it, not the mason and not the brick company. The reason recorded on the form is addition or makeover.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed on by hand. The correction line reads 100% staining of the new brick to closely match the original (old) brick, so every new unit was worked rather than a few off-color ones. The storyline adds that the contractor and the brick dealer planned ahead and found the closest brick they could in size and texture before any stain was mixed.

2019, twenty-one years on

What twenty-one years prove

Same plaza, same corner, and brick that still reads as one wall at walking distance and at arm's length. On the certification scale that is Platinum, the top band, which covers twenty years and over. As of 2026 the work is twenty-eight years old, and the 2019 certification is the most recent record on it.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 035, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
