Darkening Pale Entrance Brick at Macomb Community College
The 8 by 8 brick at the entrance of this community college went up too light. The company that made the brick paid to have the color corrected rather than torn off. It was photographed again twenty-one years later and certified then.
1998
What was wrong
The brick arrived too pale. Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty; the 8 by 8 units at the entrance did not read as the color they were meant to be. The file states the issue in one line: the color of their 8 by 8 brick were too light.
It was hired by the brick manufacturer, not the college and not the mason. A brick company decided the color of a finished building it had supplied was its own problem, and paid for staining over tear-out.
What was done
Mineral stain, brushed on by hand, unit by unit across the entrance. The correction field reads: we darkened the brick to the desired shade. The storyline field on the same sheet says lightened. Both are transcribed below word for word, beside the scan.
2019, twenty-one years on
What twenty-one years prove
The file records the outcome in its own words: they look great 21 years later. On the certification scale that is Platinum, which covers twenty years and over. As of 2026 the work is twenty-eight years old, and the 2019 certification is the most recent record on it.
The signed file
Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 218, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
