The corner of Bluffton High School in 2019, its brick reading as one red and brown range along both walls

Darkening Light 8x8 Units on a Bluffton High School

The square 8x8 units set into this school's brick came out far lighter than the wall around them. The company that made the brick paid to have them darkened rather than cut out. It was photographed again nineteen years later and certified then.

What was wrong

The building is faced in a red and brown range with square 8x8 units set into it as a diamond pattern and as accent courses. The file puts the fault in eight words: many of the 8x8's were way too light. In the 2000 frames those squares read as near white against the brick around them.

It was hired by the brick manufacturer, not the school and not the mason. A brick company decided the color of a finished school it had supplied was its own problem, and paid for staining over cutting the units out.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed in by hand, on the 8x8 units only. The file records two passes: the squares already laid in the wall were darkened in place, and the loose 8x8's still stacked on the ground were darkened before the mason set them. The field brick was left alone.

What nineteen years prove

Same wall, same squares, and they still sit inside the range of the brick around them. On the certification scale that is Gold, which covers fifteen years and over. The line in the file reads: the staining has lasted over 19 years. As of 2026 the work is twenty-six years old, and the 2019 certification is the most recent record on it.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 070, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
