Staining the Upper Walls of Washington Hall to Match Below

The brick on the upper floors of this university hall did not match the brick below it. The upper wall was stained to bring it into the range of the bottom, and the building was photographed again and certified Bronze in 2019.

Case No. 263
Structure Three-story university hall
Location Notre Dame, Indiana
Stained Not dated on the file
Re-photographed 2019
Elapsed 7 to 9 years, Bronze level

Before

  1. The long side wall of the hall before the work, three floors of pale yellow brick at ground level with the two upper floors running orange and pink above a stone belt course Before View this photo larger

What was wrong

The file puts it in eleven words: the upper section of the building did not match the bottom. Below the stone belt course the wall is the pale yellow brick the campus is built from; above it the two upper floors run orange and pink.

It was hired by the school or university. Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty. The complaint was color.

What was done

The file records it in twelve words: we stained the upper part of the wall to match the bottom. Mineral stain on the newer upper brick only, taking it into the range of the older wall below rather than lifting the whole elevation to a new color.

After

  1. The same elevation after the work, all three floors reading as one buff yellow range, with the gilded statue and lantern of the campus dome standing above the roofline After View this photo larger
  2. The wall in 2019 from the lawn, the courses running one even buff yellow from the belt course to the top floor, with a Gothic wing of the same brick at the right After, 2019 View this photo larger

What the record shows

The upper floors still sit inside the range of the wall below them, with no line returning at the belt course. On the certification scale that is Bronze, which covers seven to nine years. The file does not date the job itself, so the band is the only measure of the span on this one.

The storyline field is the argument in one line: we can color enhance new brick to better match older brick.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 263, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
