The older wing of the campus inn in 2019, brick reading as one tan and brown range across three storeys

Matching the Morris Inn Original Brick to a New Wing

A large renovation added a new area to this campus inn, and the file records that the original suffered by comparison. The mortar was stained first to match, then each brick to its own recipe. It was photographed again seven years later.

Case No. 202
Structure Inn on a university campus
Location Indiana
Stained 2012
Re-photographed 2019
Elapsed 7 years, Silver level

2013

  1. The new wing still under construction, pale buff brick running past a row of dormers to an arched entry, with bare dirt and two portable toilets in the foreground Before, 2013 View this photo larger
  2. An applicator in a hard hat working stain into the brick by hand from a platform, a second crew on a boom lift at the storey above and orange safety pennants strung along the wall below During, 2013 View this photo larger

What was wrong

The building went through a large renovation and a new area was added to it. Set against the new blend, the original brick suffered by comparison. The mason or contractor hired the correction, not the university.

What was done

The mortar was stained first, to match. Then the brick, using multiple recipes, each unit given a specific color and placed strategically so the wall would read into the new blend rather than beside it.

2019, seven years on

  1. The older wing seen from the courtyard in 2019, three storeys of tan and brown brick over a glazed ground floor, with snow on the roof slope behind After, 2019 View this photo larger
  2. The entrance in 2019 across a snow-covered forecourt, MORRIS INN lettered in the stone over the arch and a lamp standard in front of the dormered range 2019 View this photo larger

What seven years prove

Both wings still read as one blend in the revisit frames. The file records a 2013 Excellence in Construction Award from the Michiana Area Construction Industry Advancement Fund. On the certification scale the level is Silver, signed in 2020.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 202, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
