The white brick gable and the head of the entry arch in 2019, one even range of whites under tree shadow

Whitening Darker Units in a White Brick Michigan Home

The white brick on this house went up with some units carrying less of the white coating than the rest of the range. The company that made the brick paid to have the darker ones brought up to match. Someone went back twenty-one years later and photographed the same entry.

Case No. 279
Structure White brick home
Location Michigan
Stained 1998

Elapsed 21 years, Platinum level

1998

  1. The recessed entry in 1998, the brick on the shaded return reading far darker than the pale units on the pier beside it Before, 1998 View this photo larger
  2. The front of the house in 1998 with an extension ladder standing against the arched entry, the gable brick a flat pale tan During, 1998 View this photo larger

What was wrong

Some of the brick did not carry as much white as the units around it. Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty; the range did not agree with itself. The file puts it plainly: some of the brick installed did not have as much white coating as other brick in the range.

It was hired by the brick manufacturer, not the homeowner and not the builder. A brick company decided the color of a finished house it had supplied was its own problem.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed on by hand, unit by unit. The scope in the file is one line: we whitened some of the darker brick. The units already inside the range were left alone, which is why the wall still reads as a range of whites rather than one flat tone.

What twenty-one years prove

Same entry, same arch, and a wall that still reads as one range. On the certification scale that is Platinum, which covers twenty years and over. The line on the file is that if it were not for the before pictures there would be no way to tell this house was ever stained. As of 2026 the work is twenty-eight years old.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 279, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
