The front of the house in 2019, its brick running from the garage gable across to the arched window bay

Darkening the Light Run on a Michigan Sweeping Gable Home

The brick on this house arrived in two runs that did not match, and it was rejected on the wall. The company that made the brick paid to have every light unit darkened rather than have the wall torn off. Someone went back twenty-one years later and photographed the same elevation.

Case No. 280
Structure Sweeping gable home
Location Michigan
Stained 1998

Elapsed 21 years, Platinum level

1998

  1. The side of the house in 1998 with the yard still bare earth, light tan brick to the first floor and siding in the gable above, the roof sweeping down to the right over a single-story wing Before, 1998 View this photo larger
  2. A window in the light brick side wall in 1998, a soldier course under the siding and the units running from cream to pale grey across the coursing During, 1998 View this photo larger

What was wrong

The brick was delivered in two runs that did not match, and it was rejected once it was on the wall. Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty; the two runs did not agree with each other. The storyline in the file calls it a very large house with a huge eye sore on the side, which is the elevation in these frames.

It was hired by the brick manufacturer, not the homeowner and not the builder. A brick company decided the color of a finished house it had supplied was its own problem.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed on by hand, unit by unit. The file records the scope in one line: 100% of the light colored brick was darkened. The units already in range were left alone, which is why the wall still reads as a range rather than one flat tone.

2019, twenty-one years on

  1. The front of the house in 2019, the brick reading as one range from the garage gable across to the arched window in the projecting bay 2019 View this photo larger
  2. The same side elevation twenty-one years later, the brick reading as one even range under the siding and the long sweeping roof 21 Years After View this photo larger
  3. Close raking view along the brick coursing in 2019, each unit a slightly different tone inside one range 2019 View this photo larger
  4. The side wall from the rear corner in 2019, the brick running unbroken past a basement window and a glass block light to the far end 2019 View this photo larger

What twenty-one years prove

Same side elevation, same course lines, and a wall that reads as one range. On the certification scale that is Platinum, which covers twenty years and over. The line on the file is that the home was stained 21 years ago and looks fantastic today. As of 2026 the work is twenty-eight years old.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 280, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
