The clipped corner of the Hudson urgent care in 2019, red brick banding running one range across the upper floor and around the angle

Bringing Dark Shaped Brick Into Range in Hudson, Ohio

The shaped brick on this urgent care came out darker than the field brick around it. The manufacturer that made the brick paid to have every shape stained into range rather than replaced. It was photographed again fourteen years later and certified then.

Case No. 319
Structure Urgent care
Location Hudson, Ohio
Stained June 2005
Re-photographed 2019
Elapsed 14 years, Silver level

2005

  1. The upper elevation of the building in June 2005, tan brick with projecting bands above a ribbon of green glass, ladders laid across a van roof below and one extension ladder set against the corner During, 2005 View this photo larger
  2. An inside corner of the building in 2005, an extension ladder run up the brick pier between two tall window bays to the banding at the top During, 2005 View this photo larger

What was wrong

The shapes were too dark. Shapes are the units that are not plain stretchers: the angled brick that turns a clipped corner, the projecting courses in a band. They come out of a different mould and often a different firing, and the file is candid that it is not always easy for a brick manufacturer to match shapes. Here they landed darker than the field. The manufacturer hired the correction.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed on by hand. The file records the scope in one line: 100% of the shapes. The target was the range already in the wall, so this is a correction of the units that were off, not a color change for the building.

What fourteen years prove

Same corners, same bands, and in 2019 the shapes sit inside the range of the field brick instead of outlining it. On the certification scale that is Silver, which covers ten years and over. As of 2026 the work is twenty-one years old, and the 2019 certification is the most recent record on it.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 319, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
