The brick gable over the front door of the Hobart house in 2021, the arched transom and the wall around it one range of pale grey

Evening Out a Poorly Blended Hobart Brick Home

The homeowner was unhappy with the color range of the brick on this house. In 1999 a portion of the units was lightened and a portion darkened until the range read the way the owner wanted. Photographed again in 2021 and certified Platinum on the file's scale.

Location Hobart, Indiana

1999

  1. The front entrance of the Hobart house before staining, grey and tan brick around an arched transom window under the gable, the light and dark units unevenly spread across the wall Before View this photo larger
  2. The gable above the entrance in September 1999, the arched transom and the grey brick around it reading as one blend, with the camera's date stamp in the corner After, 1999 View this photo larger

What was wrong

Nothing had failed. The file records the brick as poorly blended: the range across the wall was not the one the homeowner had wanted. The homeowner hired the correction directly, not a builder and not a brick maker.

What was done

Mineral stain, applied by hand to a portion of the units. Some were lightened and some darkened, which the file calls color enhancing, until the homeowner approved the range. The 1999 after frame carries a camera date of September 15, 1999, the year the form gives.

2021, twenty-two years on

  1. The same entrance in 2021, pale grey brick around the arched transom and the front door under the gable, with the certification stamp in the corner After, 2021 View this photo larger

What twenty-two years prove

Same gable, same arch, same door. The 2021 frame is a digital photograph beside two film prints, so the eras carry different color casts. What to compare is the range across the units, one blend in both. On the certification scale that is Platinum, twenty years and over.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 367, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
