The stone chimney of a Grand Rapids house in 2019, running the full height of a gray stucco gable beside a tall arched window

Darkening Manufactured Stone Corners on a Grand Rapids Home

The corners of this house did not match the walls they turned. They were darkened by hand in 2003 until they sat back inside the range the rest of the stone was already in. It was photographed again sixteen years later and certified then.

2003

  1. An outside corner of the house in 2003, the stone running cream and pale tan around the return beside a tall recessed opening 2003 View this photo larger
  2. A corner of the house under construction in 2003, cream corner units turning past two windows while the wall behind them runs gray and brown During, 2003 View this photo larger

What was wrong

The file puts it in five words: the corners did not match. Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty. This is manufactured stone rather than brick, and in the 2003 frames the corner units read cream against a wall that runs gray and brown behind them.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed on by hand. Not one color over the wall: only the corners were taken down until they sat inside the range the rest of the stone was already in. The line in the file is nine words: we darkened the corners while keeping the desired range.

2019, sixteen years on

  1. The gable end of the house in 2019 from the poolside, the stone chimney and the stone base course carrying one range of tan, gray and brown against gray stucco 2019 View this photo larger
  2. The chimney from the ground in 2019, its corner returns holding the same tan and gray range as the face for the full height of the gable 16 Years After View this photo larger
  3. The foot of the chimney in 2019 where it meets the garden walls, the corner reading as one range with the flat wall on either side of it 2019 View this photo larger

What sixteen years prove

The mark on the file is Gold, which covers fifteen years and over on the certification scale. The sentence the file wants read is its own: even on MFG stone, we have held up great. As of 2026 the work is twenty-three years old, and the 2019 certification is the most recent record on it.

The 2019 photographs were taken on a day the homeowners were hosting a pool party. The file says they were gracious about it.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 037, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
