The garage gable of the Dodge Park house in 2019, its brick reading as one even range of red and tan

Darkening Off Color Brick at the Dodge Park House

A few brick in the range on this house came out the wrong color, scattered through a wall that was otherwise even. The company that made the brick paid to have the odd units darkened back into the range in 2004. It was photographed again fifteen years later and certified then.

2004

  1. The garage gable in 2004, a scatter of brick through the range reading paler and pinker than the units around them Before, 2004 View this photo larger
  2. The same gable partway through the work in 2004, an extension ladder standing against the wall and darker units worked into the range above it During, 2004 View this photo larger

What was wrong

The file puts it in seven words: there were off-colored brick in the range. Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty. A handful of units had come out a different color from their neighbours, and on a plain gable end they were the first thing anyone saw.

The brick manufacturer paid for it, not the homeowner and not the builder. The company that made the brick treated the color of a house it had supplied as its own to answer for.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed on by hand, unit by unit. The correction on the form is one line: we darkened the off-colored brick to blend in with the rest of the brick. Only the odd units were touched, which is why the finished gable still reads as a range of reds, tans and browns rather than as one flat color.

2019, fifteen years on

  1. The same gable fifteen years on, the whole field reading as one range of red and tan brick from the eaves to the apex 2019 View this photo larger
  2. The house from the driveway in 2019, the brick gable holding one even range where it meets the cream siding of the wing beside it 2019 View this photo larger
  3. The covered front entry in 2019, red brick running from the garage return to the porch, the frame carrying the Brickman Certified stamp 15 Years After View this photo larger

What fifteen years prove

Same gable, same brick, and the units that were corrected still sitting inside the range with the rest. On the certification scale that is Gold, which covers fifteen years and over. As of 2026 the work is twenty-two years old, and the 2019 certification is the most recent record on it.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 175, transcribed beside the document so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
