The brick gable of a two-story home in 2019, an even tan and brown range running up to the eaves

Darkening the Light Gable Peaks on an Avon Home

The peaks of this two-story house came out lighter than the brick below them. The company that made the brick paid to have them darkened, in a few hours on site. It was photographed again sixteen years later and certified then.

Case No. 076
Structure Two-story home, multiple gables
Location Avon, Indiana
Stained May 2003
Re-photographed 2019
Elapsed 16 years, Gold level

2003

  1. The gable end of a two-story home in 2003, its buff brick reading pale and washed out across the whole peak above the garage Before, 2003 View this photo larger
  2. Close view of the same gable peak in 2003, near white units scattered through the tan brick around the attic vent 2003 View this photo larger

What was wrong

Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty. The light end of the brick range landed in the gables, which on a house this tall is what you see from the road. The file records the issue as light areas in the peaks of the house.

It was hired by the brick manufacturer, not the homeowner: the company that supplied the brick paid for staining over tear-out.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed on by hand and only onto the units that needed it. The correction on the form is four words: darkened the light areas.

2019, sixteen years on

  1. The same gable end in 2019, the brick an even tan and brown range from the peak down to the arch over the garage door, the Brickman certified stamp entering the bottom corner of the frame After, 2019 View this photo larger
  2. The gable seen from below in 2019, the raking eaves and the attic vent above a soldier course arch, the brick one consistent range 16 Years After View this photo larger
  3. The gable brick at unit scale in 2019, tan, gold and brown units with pale mortar joints running down to the soldier course arch 2019 View this photo larger

What sixteen years prove

Same gable, same vent, same arch over the garage door. On the certification scale that is Gold, which covers fifteen years and over. The file is candid about the one thing that moved: "It may have lightened slightly since the day we finished the project, but we were only on site for a few hours, and it most likely lightened a few hours after we left the site, not years later." As of 2026 the work is twenty-three years old.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 076, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
