The brick pier between the front door and the garage of the Romeoville home in 2019, a pale pink and buff blend under a carriage lantern

Lightening Dark Brick and Headers on a Romeoville Home

Dark brick turned up in a wall that was not meant to have any. The company that made the brick paid for the correction and bought half a day on site. It was photographed again twenty-two years later and certified then.

Structure Brick and siding home
Location Romeoville, Illinois
Stained 1997

Elapsed 22 years, Platinum level

1997

  1. The front entry in 1997, the brick around the door and across the header course reading much darker than the units beside it During, 1997 View this photo larger
  2. The same entry later in 1997, the door surround and the header course now sitting in the same red and buff range as the wall After, 1997 View this photo larger

What was wrong

The brick arrived with units darker than the range they were meant to sit in, the headers among them. Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty. The file puts it plainly: there were dark brick that should not be in the range.

It was hired by the brick manufacturer, not the family and not the mason. A brick company decided the color of a finished house it had supplied was its own problem.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed on by hand, unit by unit. The dark brick and the headers were lightened into the range of the units around them, which is why the wall still reads as several colors rather than one flat tone. Half a day on site.

What twenty-two years prove

The file does not claim a perfect match. It says the wall came out a little light. Twenty-two years later it is still light: the color it was mixed to in 1997 is the color the house wears now. On the certification scale that is Platinum, which covers twenty years and over.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the house. This is the one for case 052, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
