The chimney and the gable end of the house from the driveway in 2019, the stack and the wall reading as one red and brown brick range

Matching a Repaired Chimney to an Ohio Brick Home

A repair left this chimney in brick that did not match the house it stands on. The homeowners had found the closest match they could buy and it was still wrong, so they paid to have all of the chimney brick stained instead. It was photographed again eighteen years later and certified then.

2001

  1. The chimney rising past the roofline in 2001, the brick above the roof a pale cream against the warmer tan and orange brick of the house wall below and beside it Before, 2001 View this photo larger
  2. Two extension ladders leaning against the chimney in 2001, the stack now reading in the same tan and orange range as the house wall beside it During, 2001 View this photo larger

What was wrong

The chimney had been repaired and the replacement brick did not match. The file records the homeowners going after it themselves first: they chose the closest matching brick they could find, and it was still not a great match and was very noticeable. The Hired by line reads homeowner, so they paid for the fix as well.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed into the brick by hand. The file is exact about the scope, and the scope is the whole stack rather than the repair: 100 percent of the brick on the chimney, stained to match the rest of the house.

What eighteen years prove

The mark on the file is Gold, which covers fifteen years and over on the certification scale. Eighteen years on, the stack and the wall it rises out of are photographed as one range. As of 2026 the work is twenty-five years old, and the 2019 certification is the most recent record on it.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the house. This is the one for case 249, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
