Matching Two Runs of Brick on a Michigan Bob Evans
The brick on this restaurant went up in two runs that did not match. The company that made the brick paid to have the off color units stained rather than replaced. It was photographed again seventeen years later and certified then.
2002
What was wrong
The brick arrived in two batches and the batches did not agree. Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty. The file records the issue in seven words: two different runs of brick were installed.
It was hired by the brick manufacturer, not the owner and not the mason. The company that made the brick treated the color of a finished restaurant as its own problem and paid to correct it.
What was done
Mineral stain, brushed on by hand. Only the off color units were treated, brought into the range of the brick around them rather than covered over. The phrase in the file is we stained the off-colored brick for a better match.
2019, seventeen years on
What seventeen years prove
One building, and a wall that reads as one brick. On the certification scale seventeen years is Gold, which covers fifteen years and over. The file puts it plainly: 17 years later the building still looks great. As of 2026 the work is twenty-four years old, and the 2019 certification is the most recent record on it.
The signed file
Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 209, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
