The brick flank of the Macomb house in 2019, its red units reading as one range under cream lap siding

Darkening Scattered Pale Brick on a Macomb Home

A few bricks on this house went up paler than everything around them. The company that made the brick paid to have them darkened into the range rather than torn out. The house was photographed again eight years later and certified then.

Case No. 222
Structure Two-story house
Location Macomb, Michigan

2011

  1. A red brick wall below a window in 2011, with several bricks in it noticeably paler and pinker than the units around them Before, 2011 View this photo larger
  2. The same wall and window with the pale bricks brought down to the depth of the units beside them, the courses reading as one red range After, 2011 View this photo larger

What was wrong

A few bricks went up noticeably paler than the units around them, scattered rather than grouped, which is the hardest kind to live with. Nothing had failed and nothing was dirty. The file puts it in one line: there were light brick scattered in a few places that did not belong.

The company that made the brick paid for the correction, not the homeowners and not the builder.

What was done

Mineral stain, brushed in by hand, one unit at a time. Only the pale bricks were touched. The file records darkening the light brick to work with the range, which is why the finished wall still reads as a mix of reds and browns rather than one flat color.

What eight years prove

The homeowners could have had the brick torn out and replaced. The file says they did not need to, and the 2019 photograph shows the elevation reading as one red range with the darker units sitting inside it. On the certification scale that is Bronze, which covers seven to nine years. As of 2026 the work is fifteen years old, and the 2019 certification is the most recent record on it.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 222, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
