Matching the Brick Above the Entrance at Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital

The large brick area above the main entrance did not match the rest of the elevation. The university that owns the hospital hired the correction rather than rebuild the wall. It was photographed again seven years later and certified then.

Case No. 413
Structure Rehabilitation hospital
Location Columbus, Ohio
Stained 2014
Re-photographed 2021
Elapsed 7 years, Bronze level

2014

  1. The hospital entrance before the work, a four storey red brick block rising above the canopy beside a grey precast wing, with DODD HALL lettered on the lower wall Before View this photo larger
  2. The upper wall after the work, two brick fields either side of a control joint reading as one red range with the same scattered grey headers running through both After View this photo larger

What was wrong

The file records one issue and it is a plain one: the large area above the entrance did not match very well. That area is the tall brick block over the canopy, the first thing anyone walking in sees. Nothing had failed and nothing was coming down. The colour was simply off the range of the wall it met.

What was done

Mineral stain, used to enhance the brick colour into a better match. The file records the work as floors two through four, which is the block over the canopy rather than a patch of it. The brick at ground level, below the canopy line, is the mixed red and orange range the block had to meet.

2021, seven years on

  1. The same brick block in 2021 under a clear sky, one red range from the canopy to the parapet with Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital and the number 480 in metal letters, and the certification stamp in the corner After, 2021 View this photo larger
  2. The low entrance wing in 2021, ground level brick in a red and orange range under a precast band, with an accessible plaque set into the wall 2021 View this photo larger
  3. The ground level wall close up in 2021, red, orange and brown units laid in a mixed range with cream joints around a metal accessible plaque 2021 View this photo larger

What seven years prove

Same block, same joints, one range from the canopy to the parapet. The signage changed in those seven years and the brick did not. On the certification scale that is Bronze, which covers seven to nine years. As of 2026 the work is twelve years old, and the 2021 certification is the most recent record on it.

The signed file

Every certified job gets the same form, signed on the day someone goes back to the building. This is the one for case 413, transcribed beside the scan so it can be read on a phone and by a search engine.
